Sale of seed and consumer potatoes
Because potatoes are propagated vegetatively, there is a tendency for the transfer of last year’s diseases. This is why it is so important to use disease-free seed potatoes. Certified seed potatoes are checked for disease by special government agencies. Despite this, even after such a check, potatoes may contain diseases.
After planting, diseases may appear that are not visible at the sowing stage, such as ring rot or fungus causing wilting. Potato disease is determined by the presence of soft spots, cracks or bruises, signs of decay. These potatoes should not be used for vegetative propagation. Start with the healthiest, strongest seed potatoes to avoid problems and ensure a good harvest.
